Discrimination

Recently, new legislation has been introduced which outlaws discrimination in the workplace on the grounds of religious belief and sexual orientation. This new piece of legislation adds to the existing legislation which outlaws discrimination in the workplace on the grounds of sex, race, disability and marital status.

As with all aspects of discrimination legislation, all employers should now review their employment practices to ensure that they are not inadvertently discriminating against a particular group or employee.

It is an employer’s responsibility to prevent discriminatory practices by staff, eg
religious jokes, sexual banter, posters etc.

Employers should have a clear policy on all forms of discrimination and communicate it to their staff.
